Do you fancy owning an iconic slice of Australian sailing history? Australia is for sale and will be open for inspection.
America's Cup yacht ‘Australia’ an iconic piece of Australia's yachting folklore will sail from MHYC next week for Sail Expo at the RPAYC in Pittwater where she will revive memories of one of Australia's greatest sporting triumphs.
KA 5 ‘Australia’ is a link with an era of pride for all Australians. She was built in 1976 and unsuccessfully challenged for the America's Cup at Rhode Island in 1977 and in 1980 with Sir James Hardy at the helm. It was his port trimmer, John Bertrand who would go on to win the America's Cup in 1983 as skipper of Australia II. The revolutionary winged-keeled yacht broke a 132-year winning streak by American yachtsmen and forever changed the America’s Cup which is now dominated by multi-hulls.
Aaron and Lara Jones and their two daughters Luella (3) and Sabine (1) are about to begin the experience of a lifetime.
In January, they will travel to Les Sables d’Olonnes in France to pick up Sabella, their brand new Lagoon 42, to begin an open-ended live-aboard adventure. The European pick up is the perfect option for the family because they plan to skipper down to some favourite spots in the Mediterranean to start the trip.
The family talked to TMG about the boat and their plans, and their feelings of excitement and apprehension, as they work through the logistics of moving their lives on to the water.
